Required Reading – Teacher Job Satisfaction Hits 25-Year Low

Emily Richmond writes,

Only 39 percent of teachers described themselves as very satisfied with their jobs on the latest survey. That’s a 23-percentage point plummet since 2008, and a drop of five percentage points just over the past year. Factors contributing to lower job satisfaction included working in schools where the budgets, opportunities for professional development, and time for collaboration with colleagues have all been sent to the chopping block.

    • I agree, but sometimes that is much easier said than done. I live in a pretty rural area with few school districts and in a state that keeps cutting education spending. Many schools are furloughing teachers. Although I’m fortunate in that I’m not tied down to this area, and I could try to find a different teaching job elsewhere or even try a new profession if I’d like, many of my colleagues can’t pick up and leave that easily.

      • I know it’s hard to walk away from something that one loves. That being said, if one no longer has passion for teaching in the classroom for whatever reason, they need to plan to opt out. Teachers that don’t enjoy their job or become too frustrated to teach or enjoy the kids has overstayed their welcome in the profession. I feel for those in rural districts, but relocation is always an option. Moving cities for employment is never fun, and I speak from experience. Good luck with everything…
